Help Fund “Bridging the Gap Between Professional Psychology and the Fire Service”

By. Robert Avsec, Executive Fire Officer

In my “2nd fire service career I’ve found a place with the Fire Service Psychology Association (FSPA) where I’m currently the Operations Chief tasked with the day-to-day activities of FSPA.

Our Challenge

Firefighters operate in a high-risk profession characterized by repeated exposure to trauma, critical incidents, occupational stress, and complex organizational challenges. Yet relatively few mental health professionals receive specialized training in fire service culture, and many fire departments lack access to psychology resources specifically designed for firefighters and their families. FSPA was created to address this gap.

Who We Are

FSPA is the leading national organization dedicated solely to advancing the scientific study and

professional application of psychology within the fire service. FSPA’s mission is to develop the scientific study and application of professional psychology to meet the needs of the fire service. Our vision is to create the specialty of fire service psychology.

What We Do

FSPA brings together psychologists, master’s-level clinicians, fire service leaders, peer support professionals, researchers, and educators to:

  • Train mental health professionals to effectively serve firefighters.
  • Educate fire service leaders on behavioral health best practices.
  • Advance research related to firefighter psychological health.
  • Develop professional standards and ethical guidelines for fire departments and psychologists.
  • Create opportunities for collaboration between psychologists and fire service professionals.
  • Host conferences, educational programs, and professional consultation forums.

Why FSPA Matters

FSPA is uniquely positioned at the intersection of occupational health, behavioral health, and the fire service. The organization is working to establish a recognized professional specialty that can improve psychological care, strengthen workforce resilience, support healthy fire department cultures, and ultimately enhance outcomes for firefighters and their families.

Investment Opportunities

Your financial support will help FSPA:

FSPA’s Fire Department Cultural Compentency Program gives mental health clinicians the opportunity to learn what firefighters do and how they do it. A lack of culturally competent clinicians is frequently cited as a reseaon for firefigthers not seeking professional help for their mental or behavioral health issues.

  • Expand firefighter-focused psychology training nationwide.
  • Develop evidence-based research initiatives.
  • Support conferences, educational programs, and publications.
  • Create new resources for fire departments and clinicians.
  • Build sustainable infrastructure for a growing professional specialty.
  • Increase access to culturally competent psychological services for firefighters and their families.

Partnership Levels

  • Level InvestmentFounding Partner $250,000+
  • Strategic Partner $50,000–$249,999
  • Supporting Sponsor $5,000–$49,999

Customized sponsorship and program partnership opportunities are available.
