Fire department leaders owe it to their members and their communities to OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAensure that the department’s physical facilities have the appropriate installed fire protection, e.g., fire sprinkler systems, undergo the same inspections for potential fire hazards that they expect from the public they serve.

The behaviors of adults in the USA account for 78 percent of the preventable residential fires. So why do the vast majority of fire prevention educations that Fire and EMS departments deliver each year target children? If we’re looking to significantly reduce the following types of fires, why don’t our programs focus on adult behaviors?

I think the topic of what the REAL impact of a fire WILL be on even a large business, but particularly a small business, is vastly understated in our business. I heard a statistic early in my career that has always stuck with me--70 percent of businesses will either never reopen, or will fail within 5 years.

Many photos and videos of firefighters and officers conducting public education sessions, PSAs, and fire apparatus: the usual stuff that we’ve done for many years. But what has been the impact of all that time and effort? Are we really achieving the meaningful outcome we all desire?

This is just some of what's been happening while NFPA and its research partners examine "mitigation technologies"...people continue to be killed and injured and property continues to be destroyed because of food-on-the-stove fires that CAN be prevented through the installation of HEHLT.

I’ve got a huge sign under the lid on my washer machine that tells me at least 10 things that I should not do when using the machine, e.g., don’t put gasoline or oil soaked clothing in the machine as this can create an explosion hazard. Shouldn’t we at least require such labeling on occupancies not protected with fire sprinkler-based suppression systems?

Consider this: when a fire sprinkler is “called upon” to do its job it means a fire has started. After the sprinkler does its job the owner or occupant still has a clean up and restoration problem, albeit MUCH smaller than if the sprinkler had not been present. With HEHLT installed on the stove top, the owner or occupant has significantly reduced the potential for a fire to start in the kitchen.
